When you’re single, it can feel like you’re doing everything you can to find that special someone. And if you’re someone who is dealing with some patience challenges in that process, it can feel like you’re just spinning your wheels.
These reflections hopefully bring up an interesting question—are there things I can (or should) be doing to prepare myself for Godly dating?
And the answer is—a resounding yes! Being single doesn’t have to be a time of sitting idly just waiting for God to move. When you reframe your thinking, it can be an exciting time to seek God first, while working on improving yourself.
Today, that’s what we’re going to take a look at. We’re going to look at a verse from 2 Peter that can be applied as a blueprint for preparation for Godly dating.
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” – 2 Peter 1:5-7
Wow. Wisdom. Before you go any further, we’d encourage you to read those three verses a few more times. The amount of wisdom packed into those few words is amazing—to say the least.
As Peter is painting the picture of a spiritually mature Christian, we see an incredible list of characteristics that we’d want to see in a future mate—and that a future mate would want to see in us. As singles, our focus should be on growing as a Christian closer to Christ, and that focus should be far above our focus on finding the right one.
This doesn’t mean you can’t actively look for that special someone, but make sure it’s taking a backseat to the bigger and more impactful picture.
So, what’s the practical application here for single Christians? Actively work on growing in these areas. Not only is it going to bring you closer to Christ, but it’s going to make you a more mature Christian much more equipped for a relationship. Not to mention, spiritual maturity can be an attractive quality to a lot of people, so it’s a nice secondary effect.
Additionally, all of these traits can help you to be a better partner when you find that special someone. When you have more self-control, you’re a better partner. When you have more perseverance, you’re a better partner. And so on, with all of the traits.
📝 Here’s Some Reflection Questions:
- Where do you personally stand on all of these traits? Are there areas you could use more work than others?
- How will each trait make you a better partner in a future romantic relationship?
- Are you prioritizing your spiritual growth over finding a romantic relationship?
