Most of us would probably agree that pride is rarely a good thing. Today, we want to talk about pride in your dating life and how that relates to your faith. Let’s get into it.
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18
Today’s society is all about pride. Society tells you that you can do anything you want, and all the credit goes to you for doing it. This overload of pride often leads to bad outcomes. It can make you stop asking for help, develop feelings that you are in control, and get you to start blazing your own trail.
Again, if these outcomes don’t sound all that bad, it’s because society says these things are good. The problem, though, is that we as Christians know that all of our abilities come from the Lord. The reason we’re able to #riseandgrind and “crush it” is because of the gifts and skills that come from the One who literally breathed life into us.
When we let pride take over, we’re effectively telling God that we did it, not Him, and that we can do it, without Him.
When it comes to dating, many people will at one point or another find themselves discouraged. Often, this comes when you’re not getting the results you want in the timeframe that you’d like. When pride is then injected into this situation, you might be tempted to “take control of your dating life.” You might be tempted to blaze your own trail and go about it on your own terms.
The reality, though, is that we can do nothing apart from God (John 15:5). As our text says today, pride goes before destruction.
To be clear, we are not saying that you should not take action in your dating life. Faith and action can and should work together. God wants us to be active participants in His plans for our lives. But this comes with a heart of understanding that He is in the driver seat. This means that we have to be ready to be patient and allow Him to work according to His timeline.
