Today, we want to look at something that sometimes is easier to overlook in the hustle and bustle of dating than we might think. Let’s get into it!
“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Ephesians 5:20
We talk about it a lot. The world is a busy place filled with a lot of noise. And when to toss in the ups and downs that inevitably come with dating, it makes for an even noisier and bumpier ride. While we’ve talked before about how to stay focused through the noise, today we want to talk about something else.
We want to talk about giving thanks to the Lord. And we want to talk about this in two contexts—when things are going according to plan, and when it feels like the wheels are falling off the wagon.
First, when things are going right and according to our plans, many of us find it easy to give thanks to God. We’re happy, filled with joy, and we thank God for the blessings in our lives. Sometimes, though, there’s a temptation to think that the good in our lives is a result of things that we did—that we are somehow responsible for it all. Now, we aren’t saying that this is something you do, but we bring it up as a good chance for all of us to self-reflect and make sure we’re doing as our text says—giving thanks to God for everything, always.
But what about when it feels like things aren’t going according to plan? It can be a bit more challenging to find a thank you in there. As our text says, though, this is something we should be doing. Let’s look at this from the big picture first. Even if you’re not having luck finding a partner or you had a date go poorly, you’re still alive and you are still loved by God. These two facts alone should be things we thank God for every chance we get.
And on the smaller level, when a date goes poorly—that’s probably actually a good thing. This may be the Lord helping to show you that someone is not the right match for you. He may be protecting you from wasting time, money, and heartache with the wrong person.
Remember, we are called not to lean on our own understanding, but to trust that God has it all under control.
