Today, we want to talk about the dangers of false teachings, especially in the realm of Christian dating advice. Let’s get into it!
“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.” – 2 Peter 2:1-2
Unfortunately, not everyone who offers suggestions, teachings, and guidance knows what they’re talking about or has your best interests at heart. And as this verse says, the bigger problem is that they’re not going to publicly come out and tell you if that’s the case. In verse 1, it says they will secretly introduce heresies. And in verse 2, it says that many will follow, which means that seeing what other people are doing isn’t a good way to protect yourself.
Here’s another wrinkle to the problem. With the advent of social media, anyone and everyone can be an influential speaker. Often, we look at someone’s follower count or blue checkmark to tell us if they are a credible source or not. Unfortunately, all those things mean is they’re pretty good at marketing. It says nothing to the validity of their remarks.
And this happens in the Christian space as well. As the Christian influencer space is not as crowded as mainstream, we see many people who view this as an easier road to more followers.
Now, to be clear, we don’t think there is anything wrong with using social media to spread the Good News. In fact, there are many Christian influencers who are doing great work. What we’re saying, though, is we need to be prepared to know whether or not the information we’re getting is true. We can’t just take things at face value and assume they’re true because they came from someone with a few million subscribers.
By being prepared to do our own research into the Word, we set ourselves up for success. Thankfully, we all have access to all the answers in the Bible. It’s up to us to put in the effort and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us to be able to see the truth.
