Sometimes it’s other people. Sometimes it’s the media. Sometimes it’s misled leaders. Sometimes it’s friends. And sometimes—it’s us.
What on earth are we talking about? We’re talking about times when things get shared or interpreted as facts that are just plain false. One of those things that you may have heard or very well may believe yourself is that being single precludes you from being able to be used by God.
Here’s the bottom line upfront. That is completely and utterly false. Today, we want to explore a few areas of scripture that address this topic head on. Additionally, we want to share some encouragement for singles who may be struggling to “find their place”.
“He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.” – Acts 21:9
“I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.” – 1 Corinthians 7:7-8
In Acts, we see a short verse talking about Philip’s four daughters who are unmarried. While many might gloss right over this verse, it means quite a bit to our discussion today. This is a clear demonstration of God gifting and using four single women for the glory of his Kingdom. If God used single people in the Bible, there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to do that today!
The second verse shared from Corinthians is Paul talking about how he wishes everyone was single like him. The idea is that it allows believers to better serve the Lord without distractions.
Now, don’t get mistaken here. This isn’t Paul saying that everyone should be single. He’s just pointing out that there are merits to it when it comes to serving the Lord. We know from Genesis that man and women are not meant to do life alone.
So, what are the big takeaways here? First, if you’re single, take advantage of this time! Use it as an opportunity to serve the Lord without the distractions of a significant other. It doesn’t mean you should stop looking, but take advantage of the time.

Second, these verses should be all the clarity you need to know that God can use you when you’re single. You are no less useful to him, no matter what anyone says. In fact, these verses could lead us to believe that you’re actually more useful single!
