Today’s passage might seem like an odd one to hear from a dating app, but our sole goal is to help you grow closer in your relationship with Christ—no matter what that looks like. Let’s get into it!
“Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” – 1 Corinthians 7:8-9
“I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 7:32-35
In this passage, Paul is telling believers that being single is actually a gift! It gives you the ability to focus more on serving the Lord than on the affairs of this world. Now, before everyone rushes to the door, let’s point out a few things that are important here and talk about how this may apply to you.
First, Paul says that this is not for everyone. If you’re someone who feels the desires and temptations of the flesh strongly, you’re probably someone who should look to find someone to marry. If you’re not, though, and you’re fully content being single, Paul says staying single may be something to consider.
Second, this is not something to rush to just because you’re frustrated with your dating life. Paul doesn’t say “if you’ve looked for the time that you feel is long enough, then go ahead and throw in the towel.” He says base it on your ability to control your desires. Go to the Lord in prayer and see how He leads you.
So, what does this mean for you? Well, for most of you, it probably doesn’t mean much with your own dating life as you may continue to feel called to find a spouse. For a few of you, it might mean a time of reflection and prayer to see where the Lord may be leading you.
But for everyone, here is a takeaway. Everyone at church loves to play matchmaker, which is great. However, if you’re someone who is called to singledom, it can cause unwanted temptations and challenges if people are actively trying to set you up with all the time—even though they mean well. So, the takeaway is this. If you’re someone who wants to help set up a single brother or sister, make sure you ask them first if they’re looking to be set up. While it’s kind to want to help and many people will welcome it, make sure they want the help first.
📝 Here’s Some Reflection Questions:
- Have you ever felt called to singledom?
- Do you know any single friends who may or may not want help with finding a Godly spouse?
