Desires. Mindset. Actions. Fate – Devotional from Romans 8:5

Today, we want to talk about mindset and the importance it has on our lives. Let’s get into it!

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” – Romans 8:5

If you’ve ever heard a motivational speaker before, they always say that “mindset is everything”. And while we don’t believe it’s necessarily everything, it certainly means a lot—and this verse in Romans supports that. The verses that follow go on to talk about how a mind governed by the flesh is death, is hostile to God, and can’t please God.

What does this look like in the context of our dating lives? It can look like a lot of things. Often, when people hear the word flesh, they immediately think it just means sexual desires. And while sexual immorality does fit in this context, the word flesh means all the sins and temptations of this world. It’s the things that our earthly bodies desire that separate us from God. If we let these things jump into the driver’s seat, then we’re destined for doom.

In other words, our desires become our mindset, our mindset becomes our actions, and our actions become our fate.

Luckily, the Bible gives us another option. If we live in accordance with the Holy Spirt and set our minds on what the Holy Spirit desires, we’ll have peace and truly be called children of God.

  1. Would you say that the Holy Spirit is the basis of your mindset?
  2. Are there areas of your life where desires of the flesh (any sin that separates us from God) may still be in control?
  3. How would you say this all applies to your dating life?
