Don’t Let the Flesh Run the Show – Singles Devotional

Today, we want to talk about who (or what) is in control of your life and your dating decisions. Let’s get into it!

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.Romans 8:12-13

Today’s message is a simple but impactful one (our favorites). If you let your flesh run the show, you’re heading toward ruin. If you let the Holy Spirt and your faith in God lead the way, it leads to good.

It really is that simple. That said, because our flesh is weak and the desires of the flesh are strong, it’s easier said than done, but entirely possible through the power of the Holy Spirit.

What we specifically want to talk about today, though, is how you can apply this to preparing for Godly dating. What can you do to ensure that you’re ready to enter the dating pool in a manner that is pleasing to God and keeps you protected as much as possible from falling to desires of the flesh?

First, you need to ensure that you understand this simple but impactful concept. If you are at all wishy-washy about the dangers of the flesh, you’re going to stumble. If you think that certain sins and desires of the flesh “aren’t that bad” and you’re “okay with them” even to a degree, you need to straighten that out with the Lord first.

Second, you need to be prepared for the temptations that may come. There are temptations you’ll have in your dating life that you may not have experienced before. Take the time to think through what these might be, pray about them, and get into the scriptures to find practical solutions to protect yourself. These solutions might be boundaries, accountability partners, avoiding certain situations, etc.

Lastly, prepare a process for regularly checking in on yourself. This can be done alone or with an accountability partner. The better you can honestly access how you’re doing and where potential stumbling blocks might be, the better off you’re going to be.

  1. What are some things you can do to ensure you’re prepared to enter the dating pool in a safe and Godly manner?
  2. What temptations have you already encountered, and what temptations haven’t you encountered that you think you might along your journey?
  3. What are some practical, Biblically-backed solutions you can put in place to help protect yourself?
