Don’t worry! We’re not going to make anyone run today just because we’re talking about endurance. We’re talking today about the endurance it takes to keep doing what is good. Let’s get into it!
“And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:13
Let’s be brutally honest for a second here. Sometimes, doing the right thing can be exhausting. For example, if you always have be kind and show grace to someone who is always nasty to you, that can be exhausting. If you never cut corners even though other people are always doing it, that can weigh on you. If you’re always responding to people you aren’t romantically interested in with grace when it might just be easier to ignore them, that takes time and effort.
We could go on and on with examples, but we are probably preaching to the choir. Doing the right thing can be exhausting. There’s a reason it’s called the right thing and not the easy thing, though.
Today’s scripture encourages us to never tire of doing what is good. Let’s look at a few takeaways from this.
First, it’s great to hear that the scriptures acknowledge that doing the right thing can be tiresome. This also means that God understands that it’s not the easy road. Sometimes just knowing that someone else understands the difficulty can go a long way.
Second, this message is sent to all Christians, which should remind us that we’re not in this alone We’re running this race in community with other believers. We’d encourage you if you don’t already have a strong Christian community, find some people that you can do life together with.
Third, the Bible would not be telling us to stay the course if it was not in our best interest and in the best interest of Kingdom work. What that means is it’s important. Not only will it benefit us, but it benefits the Kingdom and most likely the salvation of those we encounter. We never know what seeds or interactions we have with others that will lead them to Christ down the road.
So, if you’re tired—keep pushing! We are here with you. Find ways to energize yourself. Let the Holy Spirit help you persevere. And ultimately, don’t lose sight of why it’s important—both to you personally and to the Kingdom of God.
