Today’s culture is one that preaches we’re all masters of our own fate and that we can do whatever we want. Let’s look at this from the perspective of a single Christian. Let’s get into it!
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive – 1 Corinthians 10:23
While you might think that this devotional is going to be about the avoidance of sin, you’d be incorrect. We’d all agree that sin is bad and we should not be partaking in sinful activities. But does that mean that just because something isn’t sinful, we should be doing it?
It does not. In this verse from 1 Corinthians, Paul points out that even though you may have the right to do something (or feel you have the right to do something), it’s not always going to be beneficial or constructive for you. The decision point on whether or not we should do something does not solely hinge on whether it is a sin or not. If it is a sin, we should never do it. But if it is not a sin, we need to ask a follow up question on whether or not it is beneficial and constructive for us.
And before we look at a few examples, it’s important to point out that the answers to the second question can and will be different for different people.
With that said, let’s look at an example.
Let’s say that someone invites you out on a date that would keep you out really late on a Saturday night. Is it a sin to stay out late on Saturday night? Most people would agree that it’s not. However, what if that causes you to miss church in the morning or to be so tired that you can’t worship with the same energy you would if you didn’t go on that date? In this instance, going on that date might be something you shouldn’t do even though it’s not a sin.
We could share examples for days, but we’re more hoping you understand the spirit of this process so you can apply it to your own life and decisions. If something is not a sin but it isn’t beneficial to your life and your spiritual growth, you may want to consider passing on whatever that is.
📝 Here’s Some Reflection Questions:
- Are there things in your life that you do that aren’t sins but are still hindering your relationship with God?
- What changes can you make moving forward to ensure that all your decisions pass through the lens of constructiveness?
