Protecting Yourself From Bad Apples – Singles Devotional from Matthew 7

At Higher Bond, we do a lot to keep you and other users safe. We manually verify all accounts, manually verify all profiles, manually verify all photos, and do countless things behind the scenes to keep you safe. And while we are confident we’re doing a great job at it, there is always the possibility that a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” is going to find its way near the flock.

Additionally, if you’re dating somewhere other than here with us, those protections may not be in place, which could mean a higher risk.

So, how do you protect yourself? Well, the answer is multi-faceted, but starts with education. Let’s get into it.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.Matthew 7:15-21

To answer this important question, we have four suggestions to look at today.

Number one, if you haven’t read our online dating safety guide, stop what you’re doing and read it now. Seriously. Not to sound like your mom telling you to do your homework, but it’s that important.

Number two, pray for wisdom and discernment. In reality, this probably should be number one. Regardless, take some time to pray and ask God to help you better identify those that mean you good and those that might mean you harm. Unfortunately, we live in a world with evil in it, and the deceitful ones can be quite clever from time to time.

Number three, talk about faith. When you’re getting to know a match, don’t follow the old adage that you’re “not supposed to talk about faith or politics on a first date,” Not only do we think the faith part is false, but we think it’s one of the first things you should be talking about before you even consider going on a date.

Listen closely to how they answer. Remember, you’re not quizzing them on Bible knowledge or anything like that. And also remember, some people may be newer to their walk with Christ. However, if they start saying some blasphemous things that make you uncomfortable, use that as a red flag to pull back and walk away.

Here’s the bottom line. Look for singles in safer spaces where your odds of finding quality matches is higher. Educate yourself on ways to stay safe. Pay attention to conversations, and don’t shy away from topics that may help you to uncover someone who doesn’t have the best of intentions. But above all, pray for wisdom and discernment.

  1. What are some red flags I’ve seen in the past that I should continue to be aware of?
  2. Are there additional ways to educate myself to be safe?
  3. Have I read Higher Bond’s online dating safety guide? (Seriously, it’s a big help!)
