If finding love were as easy as finding a verse about wise counsel in Proverbs, no one would be single. The book is absolutely filled to the brim with wisdom about getting advice and not making major life decisions alone—and for good reason.
Today, we want to talk about the importance of having good counsel as it applies to Godly dating.
“Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise. Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” – Proverbs 19:20-21
When it comes to dating, you’re going to have a lot of important decisions to make that could very well have a major impact on the rest of your life. This could be things like “Should I message this person?” or “Should I go on a date with this person?” or “Should I break up with this person?” or “Is this the person God wants me to be with?”
If your palms are already starting to get sweaty thinking about the gravity of these questions, we have some great news. As Christians we have some truly amazing ways to help us make these decisions. First, prayer is always the perfect starting point to seek wisdom for tough decisions. God will always provide wisdom for those who seek it.
Second, and the more often overlooked, is the use of good counsel. Now, this doesn’t just mean your favorite person to talk to or your friend that always gives you the spiciest answers. Good Godly counsel is someone who is deeply rooted in their faith and gives you truthful guidance that comes from a Biblically-sound position. It’s someone who shares what is truly best for you based on what the Bible says is best, not what their own opinion is or what they think you want to hear.
What happens if you don’t have anyone like this? It’s time to get more connected! The time to build that support system is before you need it. Start going to small groups, meet with pastors, and connect with people who you believe will have wisdom and life experience they can speak from.
Here’s the bottom line. If you’re making important relationship decisions on your own without at least getting input from others, you’re potentially missing out on some much-needed perspective. You don’t always have to take the advice they give you, but at least hearing and thoughtfully considering the points of view of other Christians is a must.
