Unless you are a superhero, it never feels great when someone says they’re not interested in a romantic relationship with you. Even worse, other people aren’t always the best at delivering this less than enjoyable news, which can make the situation hurt that much more.

Today, we’d like to look at the topic of rejection and share a few things you can do to help.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

Here’s some truth be told to get you started. If you’re actively searching for someone special and you’re reaching out to people you’re interested in, you’re probably going to face a fair amount of rejection. And while that might sound discouraging, here’s a few thoughts that can help.

First, don’t think of it as rejection. It’s far too easy to take rejection personally. Just because someone says they don’t want to pursue the idea of a romantic relationship with you does not mean there is anything wrong with you. In fact, the majority of the time, it’s based on their personal preferences, their particular relationship goals, where they are in their walk with God, how God is speaking to them, or something going on in their life. It’s not them rejecting you. It’s simply them sharing that they have a different view on things than you.

Literally calling it something different like “opting out” or “passing” or “sharing their opinion” instead of calling it rejection can go a long way.

Second, your value does not come from what other people think. Your value comes from being a child of God. Period. Hard stop. Just because someone else decides to pass on a potential relationship doesn’t diminish the value you have given to you by God.

Lastly, if we truly trust that God has plans for us, then “rejections” should feel like nothing more than getting one step closer to that plan. They should be celebrated. A famous quote by Thomas Edison says that he didn’t fail 10,000 times when trying to invent the lightbulb. He just found 10,000 ways that won’t work. He celebrated the “failures” as victories because he knew it was one step closer to what was right.

If you can truly get behind all three of these thoughts, “rejection” will stop feeling personal (because it’s not), and you can have so much more confidence in your search for love.

  1. Am I viewing someone passing on a relationship with me as a personal rejection or just another step in the right direction of God’s plans?
  2. Are there things I can write down to remind myself of this when someone shares that they’re not interested?
  3. What can I do today to reframe my view on rejection in romantic relationships?
