Today, we want to revisit the topic of wisdom with some encouragement for you. Let’s get into it.
“Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.” – Proverbs 4:6
If there is a theme throughout the Book of Proverbs, it’s the importance of wisdom. Our challenge for today’s devotional was not finding a verse on wisdom, it was picking out which one to use! The one we selected shares some simple but important themes we want to look at.
First, we’re given the command not to forsake wisdom. In our dating life, there is always the temptation to think that we know better. We talked yesterday about how pride in our dating life can lead us to think we can do it on our own without God. More specifically, that pride leads to an abandonment of the wisdom we know to be true. As singles, we need to heed this command and ensure that we continue to trust in the wisdom we receive from the Lord.
Why? Well, the rest of the verse tells us that wisdom will protect us and watch over us! The Lord provides us with the knowledge and resources we need; it’s just up to us to follow it. If you want to read more about this, almost any chapter in Proverbs is filled to the brim.
While this may seem straightforward (and it is), there is one nuance we want to look at today. Wisdom comes from a lot of places, and not all “wisdom” is created equally. The Lord sends wisdom, and we should know as followers of Christ that this wisdom reigns supreme. It should be the end all be all that guides our lives.
But wisdom can also come from books, articles, the media, friends, etc. It’s important that you realize this wisdom may be wise—and it may not be. Just because it’s shared by your favorite influencer and put over a pretty background on Instagram doesn’t instantly mean it’s actually wise. It doesn’t mean that it’s not, but you need to take it with caution.
The point here is that wisdom from God should be seen on a different level. Our text from today is talking about wisdom from God, not wisdom from man. God may speak to you through some of these other mediums, but just be prepared to put everything through a Biblical lens to make sure you’re following the right guidance.
📝 Here’s Some Reflection Questions:
- Where do you get your wisdom from for your dating life?
- Does wisdom help to drive your dating life and your decisions?
- What changes could you make to help ensure you’re letting wisdom lead the way?
