Today, we want to talk about something that’s extremely important for all of us to remember, especially when things are going great. Let’s get into it!
“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” – 1 Corinthians 10:12
In this verse from 1 Corinthians, Paul offers a very simple (yet powerful) word of caution. What he’s saying is that we have to be vigilant and on guard for threats and vulnerabilities even if we feel rock solid. He’s telling us not to become complacent. There’s a popular phrase used in the military community that says, “Complacency kills.” The idea is that in higher stakes environments, the act of complacency can actually lead to the loss of life.
And, if we’re being honest, is there really any more high stakes environment than the fight for our hearts? Probably not.
If you feel like you’ve got your life under control, your relationship with God is on point, and you’ve gotten a handle on the sins that bring temptation—amazing! However, just because we are made whole in Christ does not mean that our earthly bodies are suddenly immune to temptation.
In the dating context, this can mean a lot of things. Most popularly, this verse is used in this context to talk about sexual sin and adultery. Just because we could never imagine ourselves falling to these things does not mean we shouldn’t be proactive about putting boundaries in place to protect ourselves.
Think about it this way—when you go to drive a car, you don’t ever expect or plan to be in an accident. However, you still put your seat belt on just in case you make a mistake or someone else around you makes a mistake.
Just because we don’t feel like any temptation can get to us doesn’t mean we shouldn’t heed Paul’s warnings to be careful.
📝 Here’s Some Reflection Questions:
- What are some vulnerabilities in your life that you feel you could better insulate and protect yourself from?
- Are there any boundaries you can put in place “just in case”?
- Have you ever slipped before even when you felt that was never possible?
