Watching What We Say – Singles Devotional from James 3:4-6

Communication is key to the dating process. Today, we want to look at a few verses from the Book of James that deal with this. Let’s get into it!

“Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” – James 3:4-6

Now, while it may seem like James it taking it pretty hard on our tongues here, he’s making a point that what we say with our mouths has the potential to bring catastrophic damage to our entire lives. A little intense? Yes, but it’s because it’s important.

In today’s world, anything you say can and will be used against you by others, by social media, and by anyone who doesn’t like what you stand for. What you say can also make or break your relationships, your dates, and your interactions with your potential future spouse. While we fully believe in the power of forgiveness, one slip of the tongue can result in irreparable horizontal (earthly) damage.

Why do we share of all this today? It’s because the more you’re aware of this, the more on guard you can be to what you say. Here’s a few suggestions on protecting yourself.

First, monitor the inputs going into your mind and heart. If you’re surrounding yourself with things of this world, those types of things are more likely to come out in the heat of the moment. Take using cuss/swear words as an example. If you spend all day around people who use this type of language, even if you don’t, you are so much more likely to do so if you get heated. If you control what your inputs are, you can have a big effect on your outputs.

Second, pray that the Holy Spirit helps you. Pray for wisdom and guidance, especially in the heat of the moment.

Third, seek out that wisdom. The Book of Proverbs is an incredible place to start for wisdom about what you say.

Lastly, turn that wisdom into practicality. Find ways to protect what you say. Look for practical applications to support healthy speech. For example, working in strategies to take a breath or a pause before you respond to something emotionally charging is a great way to give your mind time to catch up with your tongue.

  1. Have you ever said something that you wished you hadn’t?
  2. Are there certain situations where you struggle to say the right thing?
  3. What are some processes and boundaries you can put in place to help?
