Big shout out to social media for making life terrible in so many unique ways! Okay, that was maybe a bit aggressive, but it hasn’t helped with the topic we want to talk about today. As a single man or woman, does it feel like every single one of your friends is either finding love, getting married, or having a baby? Spend just a few minutes on social media and you’ll surely see a parade of people reaching their relationship goals.
If we’re being honest, this often begs the question—what about me? That’s what we want to talk about for a few minutes today.
“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” – Proverbs 14:30
It would be great if we could always just be happy anytime anyone else is finding relationship happiness. And, often, we are! However, when our streak of days of not finding someone start to grow in numbers and simultaneously it starts to feel like everyone else is meeting their special someone—it gets hard.
What about me? While we understand this question, it’s one we need to make sure we’re reflecting on in a healthy way.
In Proverbs 14:30, Solomon instructs us that a heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. If we are jealous or envious of our friends, family, and acquaintances finding love, the forecast is not great for us.
Not only is envy a recipe for feeling bad, but it can also work against us when it comes to finding love. If we start to become bitter and resentful toward dating as a whole, that’s going to start to reflect in our decisions and emotions.
Now, changing your way of thinking is often easier said than done. Thankfully, we have a relationship with Christ who is the ultimate potter that can mold our hearts and bring on real change from the inside out.
Here are three practical steps you can take to shift how you react to other people having romantic success when you’re in a season of patience.
- Refocus on the fact that the plans God has for you are not always going to be the same as everyone else’s. And yes, this often includes the timeline.
- Pray. Ask God to help change your heart. And then—keep praying.
- Cut out social media. Constantly subjecting yourself to something you’re struggling with is never wise. If you saw an alcoholic trying to cut out alcohol but they were still going to the bar every day, you’d think that was a terrible plan.
📝 Here’s Some Reflection Questions:
- How do you react when you see other people finding romantic happiness? If you’re being honest, are the feelings genuine happiness or is there some envy?
- What are some steps you can take to protect your heart and stop comparing your romantic journey to anyone else’s?
- Do you truly trust that God has a plan for you, which includes your romantic life?
