“You’re too old to get married!” “You’re too young to get married!” Two tales as old as time. You see, the world loves to tell you that your age and the world’s perception of your age are more powerful than the plans God has for you. Today, we want to challenge those views and offer some encouragement for those of you that are tired of hearing these phrases.
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” – 1 Timothy 4:12
We’ll start with those of you who may be feeling like your clock is ticking and that maybe you’re just too old to find love or get married. Here’s about as blunt as we can be—that is complete bologna. The world may tell you that as you get older, you become less desirable and your chances of finding someone special dramatically drop. And while that might come true for people who fall victim to believing it, God has never been one to have his plans restricted by the limiting views of this world.
All throughout the Bible we see stories of people having babies, getting married, and doing great things much later in life. If you need some inspiration, research Abraham, Moses, Sarah, Anna, and Simeon for starters. Just because your timeline doesn’t look like someone else’s doesn’t mean that God is not fully in control.
And for those of you who are younger, Paul says clearly in 1 Timothy that you have the opportunity to be used by God for his glory regardless of your age. Now, this is not a license to run out and get married to the first person you date when you turn 18. There are occasions where waiting to get married may be what God has in store for you, so don’t take this verse as a free ticket to run off with your first love, unless that truly is God’s plan.
Here’s the bottom line for both older and younger Christian singles receiving pressure from the world. Seek your answers, guidance, and wisdom from God, not from the world. Don’t force something to happen or walk away from something just because the world has led you to believe it’s right or wrong. Do move forward or choose not to move forward with relationship decisions based on the wisdom and guidance you receive from God, His Word, strong Christian counsel, and your prayer time.
And guess what? Sometimes God’s plans may contradict what the world says is right or wrong when it comes to your age.
